Tips and Tricks to get the best vacation home experience:

Sticking to your spending budget:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is high season in Isle of Palms. To get the best value, consider changing your family's Charleston area vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
  • Property managers frequently offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guides have deals for nearby shops and restaurants.

Planning and picking the perfect Charleston area rental home:

  • Choose your vacation week and max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration you need. Renovated, Charming 3 BR Villa in WD, Golf Cart Included, & Short walk to Beach! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out what configuration is suitable for your family.
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or could be applied to your invoice.
  • Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.

Advice for your stay:

  • Store the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents many concerns.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let thieves ruin your trip.
  • Make a record of any issues with the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if there is a dispute.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a terrific source for finding the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • On check-out day, take a walk-through to confirm you didn't leave anything behind. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on good ratings to propel more reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback find their best vacation home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
