Strategies to get the perfect Charleston area rental home experience:

When to visit & When to book:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. To find the best value, consider changing your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your family qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Property managers frequently offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Look for your local Charleston area area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides contain coupons for local tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Begin by choosing potential vacation weeks and a max budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Modern Studio Apartment in Historic Building on Broad Street has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the property manager before you book the rental. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the owner about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • If there's a specific Charleston area beach you love, look for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental

Tips for a fantastic stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
  • Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect your property!
  • Make a record of any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your peace. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent reviews to stimulate new bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
