Tips to get the perfect vacation home experience:
How to get the best value:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. Reserve your Charleston area vacation in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group.
- Property managers often offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Many management companies supply Charleston area area visitors guides that include special offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Filter your search:
- Select vacation week and max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Modern, marsh-front, 2-story townhome w\/ deck & shared dock on James Island has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available online. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before you book the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly rental. Get details on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
Considerations for your stay:
- We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Upon check-in, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of problems.
- Be respectful. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected everything. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave feedback! Hosts rely on great reviews to stimulate future bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your review find their best vacation home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
