Getting the best Charleston vacation home experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are high season in the Charleston area area. Booking in Fall or Spring months is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Property managers sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group.
  • Property managers typically offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitor guides which include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to pick the best rental home in the Charleston area area:

  • Choose vacation week and maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Modern House - Downtown Charleston - Parking! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available on booking websites. If not, email or call the property owner before booking the vacation property. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is best for your family.
  • Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or charges may be applied to your agreement.
  • Looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking

Additional considerations:

  • Be sure you get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. Store the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let crooks ruin your family vacation.
  • Record any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if there is a dispute.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your peaceful neighborhood. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget anything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and look for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
