Our top Charleston vacation rental booking tips:

When to book a Charleston area rental & When to go:

  • June, July, and August are high season in Charleston. To get the best rental within budget, we highly recommend booking in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines contain offers and deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Choose your vacation dates and maximum budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Luxurious 3BR home w full amenities-20 min from downtown and Kiawah-30day rental has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is regularly accessible online. If not, reach out to the host before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is optimal for your vacation.
  • If there's an individual Charleston area destination you crave, look for homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, filter your search for a property that allows animals. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some property managers charge additional pet fees.

Advice for your stay:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. Store the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of concerns.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peace. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Double-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at departure. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
