Tricks and tips to get the perfect vacation rental experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- Summertime is high season in the Charleston area area. To get the best value, try shifting your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer excellent temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some owners offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your family.
- Property managers often offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines contain offers and deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Planning, selecting, and booking your prefectvacation home:
- Begin by choosing potential vacation weeks and a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Guest's Favorite
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is often available on booking pages. If not, email or call the property owner before you reserve your home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out what bed configuration is right for your family.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
More tips for your visit:
- Be sure you get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
- Upon check-in, record any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to confirm you didn't leave anything behind. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a wonderful time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
