Tips to get the perfect Charleston area vacation rental experience:
Get the best rental home value:
- Reserve your Charleston area vacation in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Property managers usually offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Narrow your rental Search:
- First, have your family choose a vacation week and a max budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your family needs. Guest's Favorite
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property manager before you reserve the home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds.
- Looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental home.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you must reserve a property that allows animals. Get information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
Tips for a smooth stay:
- We recommend storing the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
- To ensure that no damages are attributed to your family's stay, inspect for any problem areas during arrival. Call the host immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be useful.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, stereo or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents quite a few concerns.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors disrupting your life at home. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Keep your rental home locked while you're out! Don't let burglars spoil your family vacation.
- Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a fantastic time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
