Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect Charleston vacation rental experience:
When to visit Charleston & When to book:
- Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Booking in Fall or Spring months is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property managers usually offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides contain coupons for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Begin by choosing a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. The Iris, Signature Suite has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is usually available online. If they are not listed, email the property management company before booking the vacation property. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
- If there's an individual Charleston area attraction you are crazy about, search for properties that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
- Some properties allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
Additional considerations:
- Store the owner's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- To make certain damages are not attributed to your family's stay, note any problem areas upon your arrival. text the host right away to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Upon check-out, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a great vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
