Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation home experience:

When to visit Charleston & When to book:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Booking in the Spring or Fall is a good way to save on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable homes.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family.
  • Property managers often offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Look for your local Charleston area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines contain money saving offers on local restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Finding the best vacation home in Charleston:

  • First and foremost, have your family commit to dates and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Elegant Downtown Charleston - 2 Bedroom \/ 2 Bath has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, email or call the property management company before reserving the rental. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what is optimal for your vacation family.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • Upon arrival, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and places you would've never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental managers make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
