Vacation rental home tips:
When to reserve a Charleston area rental & When to go:
- Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Reserve your rental home in Fall or Spring months to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some owners offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property management companies often offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guide magazines have discounts for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Select vacation week and spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Downtown Charleston Charm: 2 Bed\/1 Bath has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email or call the property manager before reserving the rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Is your family looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request details on breed, size, and type requirements. Some property managers charge additional pet fees.
More considerations for your visit:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
- To make sure that damages aren't attributed to your visit, inspect for any problem areas during check in. text the property manager immediately to relay any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your home life. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Lock your rental while you're out. Keep your property safe!
- On check-out day, take a walk-through to make sure you haven't forget anything. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
- Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on great reviews to drive more bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
