Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation home experience:
Getting the best value:
- The sooner you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. Booking a rental in the Spring or Fall is an excellent way to save on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Often, property management companies supply Charleston area area travel guides which often include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Planning, selecting, and booking the perfectvacation home:
- Choose your dates and max budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Downtown 3 Bedroom with Lots of Natural Light has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rental home search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally available online. Otherwise, reach out to the property management company before you reserve the home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to establish what is suitable for your trip.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you must book a property that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
- Looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
During your stay:
- Get the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Keep the property locked while you're gone! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
- Document any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a fantastic source for finding the best local beaches and restaurants.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great time? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
