Our top Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
Get the best value:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To find the best rental within budget, we strongly suggest booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at Charleston area restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
- Property managers typically offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines have coupons for local shops and restaurants.
Narrow your rental Search:
- To start, have your family choose dates and a maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Charming 1-bedroom apartment in wonderful Charleston, 10 min to downtown & beach has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before reserving your home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the owner about your furry family members before booking.
- If there's a certain Charleston area destination you are crazy about, look for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking
During your stay:
- Take a copy of the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of problems.
- Lock your rental while you're out and about. Protect your property!
- During arrival, document any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors disrupting your life at home. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Double-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a terrific stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
