Tips and Tricks to get the optimal Charleston area vacation home experience:

Sticking to a rental budget:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. To get the best value, try changing your family's Charleston area vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some owners offer special rates for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Many management companies supply Charleston area area travel guides which will include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Choose a group leader, select your vacation dates, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Cast Away by AvantStay
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the property manager before you reserve the property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what bed configuration is best for your vacation group.
  • If there's a particular Charleston area destination you simply love, look for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.

Know before you go:

  • Get the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. Put the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Document any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many issues.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a fantastic stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
