Tricks and tips to get the perfect rental home experience:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is high season in Charleston. Book your vacation home in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
- Property managers often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Often, management companies supply Charleston area area visitor guides which include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
How to choose the best rental home in Charleston:
- Select a group lead, choose your dates, and select a budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. 2-story downtown Charleston house with balcony, washer\/dryer, central AC, WiFi has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email or call the property management company before you book the vacation property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Some rentals allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property management company about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- If there's a particular Charleston area destination you simply love, keep an eye out for homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
Tips for your stay:
- Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of difficulties.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are away, just like you would back home.
- Upon arrival, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave a review! Hosts rely on great ratings to compel more bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
