Strategies to get the best Charleston vacation home experience:
Find your perfect rental:
- Summertime is high season in Charleston. To book the largest rental within your budget, we suggest reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite Charleston area restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for local shops and restaurants.
Make a plan and pick your Charleston area rental home:
- To start, have your family decide on dates and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. ?Home Too? in downtown Charleston, by MUSC has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rental home search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible online. If they are not listed, email the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what configuration is right for your vacation group.
- Visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Get details on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
More considerations:
- Add the host's contact info to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- To make sure that no damages are attributed to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas during check in. Contact the host right away to record any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be useful.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Lock your rental home while you are away. Protect your property!
- Upon check-out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on great ratings to inspire more reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
