Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation rental experience:
Finding your perfect rental:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To get the best value, consider changing your vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
- Booking websites often offer customers an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, visitors guides have money saving offers on local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Selecting the best vacation rental in the Charleston area area:
- Choose your vacation week and spending budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration your family needs. Walk to Charleston’s Best Dining and Entertainment has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available online. If you don't see them listed, email the host before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine what configuration is best for your group.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you will need a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a particular Charleston area attraction you are enamored with, browse homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Have a wonderful stay:
- Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your vacation home while you are out. Protect your property!
- To ensure that damages aren't linked to your stay, make a record of any problem areas when you arrive. Call the property manager right away to record any issues. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers bothering your peaceful home. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to confirm you have not forget anything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a fantastic time? Most rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
