Strategies for getting the perfect Charleston area rental experience:

Getting the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Charleston area area. Booking your vacation home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is our favorite way to save money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties.
  • Hosts sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family.
  • Property management companies often offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guides have deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

How to select the best rental home in the Charleston area area:

  • Start by selecting potential vacation weeks and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Urban and Charming, Sleeps 12 on King Street! has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before you reserve the property. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your family.
  • Some properties allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Know before you go:

  • Put the owner's information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let crooks spoil your vacation.
  • Record any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent ratings to drive more bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
