Tips for getting the best Charleston rental home experience:
When to go & When to book:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. To get the best value, try shifting your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines contain coupons for nearby tours and attractions.
Selecting the perfect rental home:
- Start by choosing your potential vacation weeks and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Urban and Charming, Sleeps 12 on King Street! has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible online. Otherwise, call the property manager before you book the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to determine what configuration is optimal for your vacation group.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or costs applied to your agreement.
More tips for your stay:
- Be sure you get the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental.
- Document any issues with the property at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many concerns.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Re-check the property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on great feedback to drive new reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
