Vacation rental tips:

How to get the best rental value:

  • In the Charleston area area, The earlier you can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are reserved early. Booking your rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
  • Booking a rental in the Spring or Fall is a good way to save on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Some property management companies offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area travel guides which often include special offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Begin by selecting trip dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Thomas Waring House
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking pages. If not, email the property manager before reserving the vacation property. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask your host about pets before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? Use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.

During your stay:

  • Add the property manager's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Record any damages to the property at check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if damages are assessed.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to make sure you didn't leave anything behind. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent reviews to drive future bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
