Tips and Tricks to get the very best vacation property experience:

Sticking to your rental budget:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in Charleston. To get the best rental within budget, we suggest reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular Charleston area attractions. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Some owners offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
  • Property managers typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines have discounts for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • First, have your group choose vacation dates and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. The Lodge Alley Inn, Charleston, South Carolina, Studio has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rental home search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If not, email the property manager before you book your home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what configuration is right for your vacation.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property manager about pet restrictions before booking.
  • If there's a specific Charleston area beach you are enamored with, look for homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of issues.
  • Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • To ensure that damages are not linked to your family's stay, record any problem areas during arrival. Contact the rental manager right away to report any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Upon check-out, complete a walk-through to make sure you haven't leave anything behind. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a great vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
