Our top Vacation rental tips and tricks:
When to visit Charleston & When to reserve a Charleston area rental home:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To book the largest rental home within budget, we suggest booking in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
- Property managers often offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to choose and book a perfectvacation home:
- Select vacation week and budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Great Stay in Charleston, SC. Easy walk to cafes, restaurants, bars, & parks has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the property owner before you book the vacation home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out what configuration is optimal for your trip.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a specific Charleston area beach you long to visit, keep an eye out for properties that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking
Additional considerations:
- Put the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few concerns.
- Lock your rental while you're out and about. Keep your property safe!
- During check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your home life. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a wonderful stay? Many rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
