Tips to get the very best Charleston area vacation home experience:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. To find the best value, consider changing your family's Charleston area vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic.
- Some hosts and property managers offer promotional rates for veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
- Property managers typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides contain discounts for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to choose the perfect rental in the Charleston area area:
- Select a group leader, select your dates, and select a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Downtown open space home with a European courtyard garden has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is commonly accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property manager before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You will need to work out which bed configuration is best for your group.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or costs may be applied to your agreement.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
More considerations:
- Get the owner's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental home while you are away. Keep your property safe!
- Document any issues with the property during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute is filed.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a excellent vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
