Tips to get the best vacation home experience:
Sticking to your spending plan:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is high season in the Charleston area area. Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is a great way to save on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Some hosts offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
- Booking websites often offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides contain deals for nearby shops and restaurants.
Selecting and booking the perfectrental home:
- First and foremost, have your family choose a vacation week and a max budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Downtown Charleston Piedaterre with Private Pool, Prime Location\n has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available online. If not, reach out to the host before you reserve the property. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a specific Charleston area beach you love, look for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Know before you go:
- Take a copy of the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your .
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Make a record of any issues with the property at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute arises.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a great resource to find the best local attractions.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to confirm you did not forget anything. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a terrific vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
