Vacation rental tips and tricks:
Sticking to your budget:
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is the most expensive season in Charleston. To find the best value, consider shifting your family's Charleston area vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines contain discounts for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Choosing the perfect rental home in Charleston:
- Choose a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Calm & Bright Apartment Downtown has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rental home search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available online. Otherwise, call the host before you book your home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or charges may be applied to your contract.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
More tips for your stay:
- Add the host's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many problems.
- Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let burglars ruin your holiday.
- To make certain no damages are linked to your family's visit, note any problem areas during check in. Get in touch with the property manager immediately to record your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and look for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
