Tips and Tricks for getting the best Charleston area vacation property experience:

Sticking to a budget:

  • Summer months are the most expensive season in Charleston. To find the most suitable vacation home within your budget, we recommend booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Charleston area restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • The sooner you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are booked early. Booking your rental property up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Many management companies supply Charleston area area visitors guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Choosing the perfect vacation home:

  • Choose vacation week and spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Charming studio with 3 pools, kitchenette & central AC has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is regularly available online. If they are not listed, email the property management company before booking the property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

More considerations:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few issues.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a terrific source for finding the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • On check-out day, take a walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful time? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
