Tips to get the best rental home experience:
Finding your perfect vacation home:
- Summer months are high season in the Charleston area area. Booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is an excellent way to save on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes.
- The earlier your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitor guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Select a designated group leader, choose your vacation week, and choose a maximum budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Tucked in among trees, get away in this charming home short walk to the beach has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property manager before you book the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your family.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
- If your group is bringing pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for information on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
More considerations:
- Add the owner's contact info to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- During arrival, document any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of concerns.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors disrupting your home life. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and places you would've not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect your property!
- Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a fantastic stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
