Tips to get the best vacation rental experience:
Sticking to a rental budget:
- Summertime is high season in Charleston. Reserve your vacation in Fall or Spring months to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- In the Charleston area area, The sooner your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Booking your vacation home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental property.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property management companies often offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Often, property management companies supply Charleston area area visitors guide magazines that include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Finding the best rental home:
- First, have your group commit to date ranges and a maximum budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family requires. The Historic St. Philip House - One Block Off King Street has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible on booking pages. If not, email or call the property management company before booking your rental. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
- Looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.
Know before you go:
- Get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- To ensure that damages are not attributed to your visit, inspect the property for any problem areas when you arrive. Speak to the host right away to relay any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would back home.
- When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your group have a wonderful stay? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
