Vacation rental tips and tricks:
Get the most from your rental home budget:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer time is high season in Charleston. To get the best value, change your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm weather, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Booking websites often offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides have coupons for nearby accommodations and attractions.
Planning and choosing a perfectrental home:
- First and foremost, have your family agree to the best dates and a maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Hurricane: Key to Vibrant Charm & Dining Pleasures has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is normally available on booking pages. If not, call the property owner before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches.
- Some rentals allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
During your stay:
- Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few difficulties.
- Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect your property!
- Note any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if there is a dispute.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a terrific resource to find the best local spots.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected everything. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a great stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
