Tips and Tricks to get the optimal Charleston area rental experience:

When to reserve a Charleston area rental home & When to go:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Charleston. Book your Charleston area rental home in the Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers often offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides have deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.

Choosing the best vacation rental in the Charleston area area:

  • Start by choosing your potential vacation weeks and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Large Groups - Downtown Charleston - 13BR\/13BA has 13 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the property management company before you reserve the home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to establish which bed configuration is best for your vacation.
  • Does your family require special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask your host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.

Tips for a wonderful stay:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • During check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be an incredible resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Lock your vacation home while you are out. Keep your property safe!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a wonderful time? Most rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
