Tips and Tricks to get the very best Charleston area vacation rental experience:
Find your perfect vacation home:
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Reserve your rental property in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitor guides that include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Filter your search:
- Select dates and maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Classic Family Beach House, short walk to beach, Pet friendly w\/ fee - 17 56th Ave has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email or call the property management company before reserving your home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your group.
- If your family is bringing pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly rental. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
- Does your group require specific amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
Considerations for your stay:
- Store the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would back home.
- Upon check-in, note any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your peace. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to make sure you haven't leave anything behind. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
