Tips and Tricks to get the very best vacation rental experience:
How to get the best value:
- The sooner your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
- Booking your Charleston area vacation home in Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property managers often offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines contain offers and deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Begin by choosing a vacation week and a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Captain's Quarters-Beautiful Home minutes to Folly has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rentals search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly accessible on booking websites. If not, call the property management company before you book the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
- Visiting for a single attraction or event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
Advice for your stay:
- Be sure you get the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental. Put the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Record any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a great time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
